Strong winds that were hampering efforts to contain the Lake Ōhau fire have subsided, and Fire and Emergency says things are looking better with currently just light winds in the area.
The fire has a perimeter of 43 kilometres but the principal rural fire officer for South Canterbury, Rob Hands, says it's now within the containment lines.
Today the metservice says the northwesterlies will turn to southerlies, some rain is expected in the area and there could be snow down to 600 metres.
Keri Jackson has been a volunteer firefighter with Twizel Fire Brigade since she was 18 and was one of the first on the scene on Sunday .
She told Tess Brunton they were met with a storm of fire.
