Fire crews have been working through the night to stop any further damage to property in Lake Ōhau Village.
It's estimated that up to half of the properties in the Mackenzie Basin settlement have been damaged or destroyed by a fire that started Sunday.
Janet Brown works in Auckland but her family built a home in Lake Ōhau.
It, too, has been destroyed.
