Lake Ōhau resident's lucky escape

From Morning Report, 6:15 am on 6 October 2020

Fire crews have been working through the night to stop any further damage to property in Lake Ōhau Village.

It's estimated that up to half of the properties in the Mackenzie Basin settlement have been damaged or destroyed by a fire that started Sunday.

Meanwhile, stories of survival, and loss, have been emerging.

Such as the one of a Lake Ōhau resident was woken by a phone call at 3am on Sunday telling him to get out, so he did, in his pyjamas and gumboots.

Seventy-nine-year-old Chris Spiers, who has recently been diagnosed with Parkinsons disease and describes himself as "a bit wobbly on his feet", told Tess Brunton about his narrow escape from the fire.
