Covid-19: Boris Johnson unveils new restrictions

From Morning Report, 6:48 am on 23 September 2020

UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson has unveiled a raft of new coronavirus restrictions in England, which he said has reached a "perilous turning point".

With positive cases rising sharply, earlier curfews have been introduced, along with tighter rules around gatherings.

The wearing of face masks is now mandatory for hospital staff and retail workers.

There are also heavier fines for non compliance. Johnson told the House of Commons that similar steps would be taken across the rest of the UK after meeting with the leaders of Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

He said the prospect of a second wave of infections had become real.
