Motorists are able to use the Auckland Harbour Bridge again for their commute into the city this morning after the two outer lanes reopened this morning.
All lanes heading south were closed overnight to allow for urgent temporary repairs.
An expert in structural steel says the Harbour Bridge had to be fixed at night so the heat from the sun didn't stretch the steel unevenly. Waka Kotahi hopes it'll allow a couple more lanes to open at some point this week but not all eight until there's a permanent fix.
An associate professor of civil engineering at Auckland University, Charles Clifton, says the part-fix of the bridge is similar to a spare tyre on a car - allowing it to work but not at full capacity.
He told RNZ reporter Jordan Bond it could only be done in the dark.
