Most of Te Tai Tokerau taking Covid-19 seriously - community leaders

From Morning Report, 7:44 am on 16 September 2020

Community leaders in Te Tai Tokerau say the majority of people in the region are taking Covid-19 seriously, despite a tide of conspiracy theories, including rumours that the virus is about as harmful as the common flu.

Yesterday Botany MP Jami-Lee Ross announced he would no longer be contesting the seat he has held since 2011, and instead would be pinning his hopes on Billy Te Kahika winning Te Tai Tokerau.

Billy TK's New Zealand Public Party has a growing following - gaining traction through the sharing of conspiracy theory videos online - including that Covid-19 is equivalent to a winter flu.

Te Aniwa Hurihanganui headed to Te Tai Tokerau to see how potential voters view the virus.

She found the local Ngāpuhi health clinic is still seeing a steady flow of people getting tested - and communities are continuing to reach out for help to manage social distancing at large gatherings.
