The sports fields of Auckland sat unused again at the weekend, and will be empty again this coming weekend, a familiar sight for the last month because of restrictions on gatherings.
An Auckland Sport and Recreation survey shows nearly 40 percent of clubs and organisations have suffered a drop in membership, and some could be close to closing their doors for good.
Their chief executive Sarah Sandley plans to call for a third round of government funding to resuscitate those on the breadline.
She told Morning Report the higher alert level in Auckland had been demoralising for community sport.
