Warning to parents after distressing video circulates on TikTok

From Morning Report, 8:43 am on 9 September 2020

Parents and caregivers are being urged to keep their children off social media after footage of a man dying by suicide went viral on TikTok.

The social media platform has been attempting to remove the video, but new copies - including versions where it's been edited to appear after something benign, like a cute animal - continue to be uploaded.

The footage originally came from a Facebook Live and is also appearing on other platforms - prompting a warning to parents to check in on their children.

Susie Ferguson speaks to Chris Stokel-Walker, a tech journalist based in the UK who is writing a book about TikTok.
