An image of Sir Edmund Hillary and Nepalese Sherpa Tenzing Norgay has sold for more than $14,000.

The photograph of Sir Hillary and Norgay, smiling triumphantly at the foot of Mount Everest, is one the millions of New Zealand history images dating to the 1800s which became lost in a 2013 international deal to digitise the images.

Sir Ed spoke of his elation at reaching the summit - and equally about the relief of being back at sea level - shortly after he arrived home after the Everest climb.

The collection's American owner has decided to sell 237 images of Sir Ed's life back to New Zealand, and they were snapped up at an auction at Webb's Auction House last night.

The auction house's head of art Charles Ninow speaks to Susie Ferguson.
