The head of a northern iwi group says they're reinstating an iwi-run checkpoint today as too many vehicles are getting into the north.
Only a very limited number of people approved by the Ministry of Health are permitted to travel through the 13 checkpoints on the Auckland border.
If people meet the criteria outlined on Covid-19 website, they do not require an exemption from the Ministry of Health to travel for these reasons.
The latest figures by police show that only 5 percent of over 100,000 vehicles that have been through the checkpoints have been turned around.
Te Tai Tokerau border control spokesperson Hone Harawira told RNZ reporter Meriana Johnsen that's too many - which is why they're reinstating a checkpoint on Waiomio Road.
Deputy Commissioner Wally Haumaha says their expectation is that Covid-19 checkpoints will not be operating in areas at Alert Level 2.
He says communication with Northland iwi was continuing.
