EU refuses to accept Belarus election results

From Morning Report, 6:12 am on 20 August 2020

EU leaders say they do not accept the result of the disputed election in Belarus as it was neither free nor fair.

In an emergency summit, the EU announced they would impose sanctions on those involved in rigging the election and silencing protesters.

The President of the European Comission, Ursula von der Leyen, outlined the EU's response.

The support follows 10 days of wide-spread protesting across Belarus after the election on 9 August.

At least two protesters have died and hundreds have been arrested.

President Lukashenko has ordered protests to be shutdown.

He warned the EU not to interfere.
