Belarus President offers to hold new election

From Morning Report, 6:18 am on 18 August 2020

The President of Belarus has bowed to political pressure, offering to hold another election if the country adopts a new constitution.

His announcement follows days of protesting and workers strikes which are the largest seen in the 26 years he has been in power.

Public anger is fueled by alleged poll rigging in the election last week and mounting police violence towards opposition supporters.

Protesters are sceptical of Lukashenko's offer.

Previously Lukashenko said he would rather be killed than agree to new elections.

EU Leaders will hold an emergency meeting on Wednesday to discuss possible sanctions.
