Slice of Oranga Tamariki Act set to be scrapped

From Morning Report, 8:10 am on 7 August 2020

A slice of the Oranga Tamariki Act is set to be scrapped.

Currently, once a parent has had one child removed from their care, government agency Oranga Tamariki can apply to take any subsequent children.

Children's Minister Tracey Martin says the law hasn't been working as intended, and will be changed.

The announcement comes at the same time as a Chief Ombudsman report criticising Oranga Tamariki for removing babies from some parents as a matter of routine, rather than as an exception.

Tania Williams Blyth is a senior family court lawyer who has spoken at the Oranga Tamariki Waitangi Tribunal hearing.

She speaks to Corin Dann.
