From Morning Report, 7:14 am on 6 August 2020

Search and rescue teams have been working non-stop overnight our time to try find survivors of yesterdays massive explosion in Beirut.

A little more than 130 people have been confirmed as dead and at least 5000 people were injured in the blast which was caused after nearly 3000 tonnes of ammonium nitrate blew up.

Blast damage extended across half the city and it's estimated over 300-thousand people will be displaced.

Lebanon's cabinet has declared a two week state of emergency in Beirut and approved an allocation of nearly NZ$100 million New Zealand to deal with the crisis.
