Māori scientists under-represented in NZ universities

From Morning Report, 7:57 am on 4 August 2020

A new study by Te Pūnaha Matatini has found Māori scientists remain severely under-represented in New Zealand universities, making up less than 5 percent of those employed.

Researchers obtained data from 14 universities and crown research institutes for the study, and found one of them had not hired a single Māori academic in its science faculty.

None of the institutions were named in the study.

Lead author Dr Tara McAllister told RNZ reporter Te Aniwa Hurihanganui she's not at all surprised by the findings, and says they show universities aren't taking their Treaty obligations seriously.
