The victims of New Zealand's first convicted slaver and human-trafficker say they're ecstatic to learn their abuser will spend the more than a decade behind bars.
The Hastings-based Samoan chief, Joseph Auga Matamata, was sentenced on Monday to 11 years in prison and ordered to pay over NZ$183,000 in reparations to his 13 victims.
Immigration officials who worked closely with his victims during the three-year investigation in Matamata's crimes, say they're thrilled with the result and relieved their ordeal is finally over.
