How widespread are human trafficking and slavery in New Zealand?

The first person in New Zealand to be convicted of both crimes will be sentenced in Napier later today.

Over more than two decades, Joseph Auga Matamata brought thirteen people from Samoa to Hastings with the promise of a better life.

But when they arrived, Matamata didn't pay them for their work, and beat them if they didn't follow his orders.
