Government unveils $50 million package to help tackle court backlog

From Morning Report, 8:18 am on 24 July 2020

A huge backlog of court cases should start to clear by early next year with the government spending $50 million on more judges, staff and resources.

Nearly 50,000 cases were adjourned in the District Court alone as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The money will fund extra judges, court staff and more resourcing for the Police Prosecution Service, Corrections, Crown Law and Oranga Tamariki.

RNZ court reporter Anneke Smith spoke to the Minister of Justice Andrew Little about what the package means for a system that was already under stress before the pandemic.
