Kiwibank is threatening to close customer accounts after an error changed their tax status to US resident.
It is demanding customers provide passports, birth certificates and proof of address within 30 days.
The bank won't say how many people are affected, but RNZ has heard a recording in which a staff member says the bank now doesn't know who the real US residents are.
