From Morning Report, 8:17 am on 8 July 2020

Melbourne is going back into strict lockdown tonight for six weeks as Covid-19 cases there surged to a new record.

Yesterday there were 191 new cases - Victoria's worst day since the pandemic began.

Victoria's premier Daniel Andrews says the state has to be realistic about the problem.

The city's 5 million residents cannot leave their homes for any reason other than work, food, exercise or medical care.

There will be a 'hard boundary' will be in place between Melbourne and the rest of Victoria.

Corin Dann spoke ABC reporter Casey Briggs and he explained why lockdown is the necessary next step.
