International tourists might now be a rare sight, but visitors are still flowing through the doors of Gisborne's Tairāwhiti Museum.

The institution has seen an increase of 160 percent in non-local visitors this June compared to last year.

Ninety-five percent of those visitors are New Zealanders.

Eloise Wallace is the museum's director.
