Youth homelessness at 'crisis point' - advocate

From Morning Report, 6:18 am on 2 July 2020

Advocates working with young homeless people say the situation is at "crisis point", and it's likely to worsen in the wake of Covid-19.

Maanaki Rangatahi - a collective of six groups - is petitioning the government, calling for targeted research and better resourcing for youth homelessness.

Lifewise, which has some supported living units for 16 to 24 year olds, is one of the groups. They've turned away 200 people in the last year.

Eighty percent of the rangitahi they speak to are Māori.

Its youth housing manager Aaron Hendry told housing reporter Eva Corlett, young people often go from time in state care or the justice system straight to the streets.
