China passes controversial Hong Kong security law

From Morning Report, 8:45 am on 1 July 2020

China has passed a controversial security law that extends its security powers in Hong Kong.

It is set to criminalise secession, subversion and collusion with foreign forces, but will also effectively curtail protests and freedom of speech.

The move had left pro-democracy activists in the city on tenterhooks.

While some protestors said they planned to hit the streets today, the most prominent pro-democracy organization, Demosisto, announced it would disband.
