PHD student wants to be let in as essential worker

A doctoral student stuck in the United States is calling for the government to treat PhD students and candidates as essential workers and allow them back to their research in New Zealand.

Education minister Chris Hipkins says international students won't be able to return in July and August for the next semester and a plan on international education will be announced next month.

Ali Khan, who's researching the Human Rights Act and its influence on long-term employment in the University of Otago, speaks to reporter Chen Liu.
