One in four primary teachers feels unsafe in class

From Morning Report, 7:28 am on 26 June 2020

A national survey shows violence in primary schools is growing with one in four primary school teachers no longer feeling safe in their own classrooms.

That is double the figure since the previous Council for Educational Research survey in 2016 and principals agree they are seeing more severe behaviour from children than ever before.

They're blaming children who come from violent homes and the rules that restrict how and when teachers can lay hands on a child to bring them under control.

RNZ education correspondent, John Gerritsen, reports.
