NZ Football president celebrates World Cup news

From Morning Report, 6:38 am on 26 June 2020

New Zealand football president Johanna Wood has been up since 11pm last night nervously waiting to find out if Australia and New Zealand had been successful in securing the rights to host the FIFA women's football World Cup in 2023.

It was confirmed the trans-Tasman bid had won just before 4am this morning.

Wood says she woke most of the people and animals on her family's Manawatu farm when the news broke.

She told RNZ's Joe Porter that winning the rights to host the 2023 FIFA tournament is one of New Zealand sports biggest achievements.

Global viewing figures for last year's Women's World Cup dwarfed those of the Rugby World Cup in Japan.
