Gisborne iwi Rongowhakaata is welcoming the opportunity to have their say on the instalment of two new replicas of Captain Cook's ship the Endeavour in the city.
The district council came under fire last week for voting 11 to 3 in favour of installing the replicas without any public consultation, and have since decided to revoke their decision.
A spokesperson for Rongowhakaata, Amohaere Houkamau, says the Mayor has met with local iwi to apologise.
She told RNZ reporter Te Aniwa Hurihanganui she was shocked when she found out iwi initially were not going to be consulted, but is pleased the council has had a change of heart.
