Large number of sexual assaults going unreported - survey

From Morning Report, 6:37 am on 20 May 2020

The largest survey of crime in New Zealand shows 94 percent of sexual assaults aren't reported to the police, while almost a quarter of people experience one or more sexual assaults in their lifetime.

Victims advocates say the survey, which was commissioned by the Ministry of Justice, will help lead to radical change in the justice sector.

Maggy Tai Rakena is the manager of sexual assault support agency START.

She told RNZ police reporter Ben Strang that the sector has known of these problems for a long time.
