Covid-19: Kiwi on life under lockdown

From Morning Report, 6:17 am on 11 March 2020

Italy is waking up to the most stringent nationwide restrictions on public life since the Second World War as the government tries to battle a surge in coronavirus cases.

All public gatherings have been banned and people must now seek permission to travel.

One Kiwi caught up in it is Joanne Gillespie, an English teacher, orginally from Nelson.

She met her husband in the Czech Republic and has lived about and hour and a half north of Rome since 2000. Gillespie's been working from home since the schools were closed late last week.

Her teenage children are studying remotely.

Her husband, meanwhile, needs paperwork to travel 20 minutes to his job.

She told Morning Report producer Siobhan Wilson people queue to go into shops one at a time and they're trying to stay away from one another.
