Wellington mana whenua say they're stretched to capacity over water

From Morning Report, 6:50 am on 21 February 2020

A Wellington iwi representative says mana whenua are being stretched to capacity, as councillors call on them to help solve the capital's water crisis.

Mayor Andy Foster has announced a new taskforce - with mana whenua involved - to fix Wellington's failing water infrastructure, as a sewage pipe remains unfixed after months, and local rivers and streams are unswimmable.

Wellington City Councillor Jill Day also wants an inquiry into Wellington's water to consider if Treaty obligations are being met.

Taranaki Whānui descendant and co-chair of the Greater Wellington Regional Council water committee, Kara Puketapu-Dentice, told RNZ reporter Meriana Johnsen there are ever increasing demands from different organisations on mana whenua.
