A Bethlehem resident says last night's shooting is sobering for the community.
One man was fatally wounded by police after a car chase, in connection with the double homicide at McLaren Falls earlier this week.
The car was spotted by police on the corner of Bellevue and Otumoetai roads, but when the car didn't pull over, police chased the vehicle down Carmichael Road.
Police say the offender leaned out of the window several times and fired shots at the police car while driving.
At one stage the man got out of his car and fired directly at officers, before getting back into the car and continuing down the road.
Colin Dougherty - who lives on the road and saw the cars drive by - says it all happened very quickly.
