Few low-decile students in fees-free scheme

From Morning Report, 6:13 am on 18 December 2019

Enrolment figures show just 29 percent of the tertiary students who benefited from the government's zero-fee scheme last year came from schools in the bottom five deciles.

The schools have 40 percent of all school students, but provided just 12,000 of the 42,000 people who were in the fees free scheme in 2018.

The Education Minister, Chris Hipkins, told RNZ education correspondent, John Gerritsen, it's still too early to know who is benefiting most from the scheme.
