A high risk operation to recover the bodies of the people killed in Monday's Whakaari/White Island eruption was due to begin at daybreak on Friday.
Police say eight bodies are thought to be on the island but through aerial reconnaissance they have been able to spot only six.
Plans for the operation were outlined on Thursday night by the Police Deputy Commissioner Mike Clement.
