Residents in the New South Wales town of Taree say they are ready to evacuate.
Taree is just north east of the Hillville fire, which is continuing to rage.
Dennis Royal, who works at Taree Tenpin says the air is hot and smoky.
He spoke to RNZ reporter Katie Doyle.
