National MP Joanne Hayes says Māori could end up better off if their welfare payments were reduced.
She says people have been telling her a party discussion document that talks about getting tough on beneficiaries is racist.
But Mrs Hayes says social welfare hasn't necessarily proved a good thing for Māori.
