Surgeons call for tougher regulations for e-scooters

From Morning Report, 7:52 am on 8 November 2019

A new study has shown that in the first 19 weeks of e-scooter use in Auckland, 180 riders ended up in the hospital's emergency department.

Almost a quarter of them had alcohol in their system, and less than 2 percent had been wearing helmets.

Auckland City Hospital surgeons are calling for a zero blood-alcohol limit, night-time curfews and reduced speed limits for e-scooter riders.

Dr Anna Brownson is the lead author of the study published in the New Zealand Medical Journal on Friday.
