Parents contest circumstances leading to child's death

From Morning Report, 6:46 am on 8 November 2019

The biological parents of five-year-old Leon Jayet-Cole have given contrasting evidence over the circumstances leading to his death.

The autistic Christchurch school boy died in hospital in May 2015, after suffering a serious head injury at his home.

Leon's stepfather, James Stedman Roberts was charged with murder, but he died in July 2016, three months before the trial was due to begin.

At a coroners inquest yesterday, Leon's father Michael Cole says he pleaded with authorities about the danger he believed Mr Roberts posed.

But Leon's mother, Emma Jayet, says she never saw Mr Roberts harm the child.
