There are renewed calls for a ban on the sale and use of private fireworks, after fires were sparked on two Auckland maunga last night.
The blaze at Mt Wellington burnt through an area about 200 metres by 100 metres. Another at Mt Eden was contained to the crater.
Auckland Councillor Josephine Bartley was on the Tūpuna Maunga o Tāmaki Makaurau Authority in the last triennium, and says the maunga are revered by mana whenua as ancestors and these fires are akin to burning a person.
