Hundreds more young people are ending up in hospital after intentionally harming themselves.
Figures from the Ministry of Health show there were more than 3000 hospitalisations of young people under the age of 20 for self-harm in 2018.
That's up more than 200 on 2017.
Youth mental health campaigner Lucy McSweeny told RNZ reporter Katie Doyle the figures are distressing and she wants action now.
