Aucklanders trying to avoid smoke as fire continues to burn

From Morning Report, 7:14 am on 24 October 2019

Fire and Emergency says most of the roof of Sky City's international convention centre has burned through, but there are still pockets causing trouble, and it's still too dangerous to put firefighters on to the roof or inside the building. The Auckland city area commander Richard Twomey told Morning Report earlier the fire is not as intense as it has been over the past two days. Ron Devlin, the Region Manager, says they're looking to bring in a few more cranes. Roads in the area are still shut and will be throughout the morning peak. Auckland city has been eerily deserted for the past two days, with most businesses having shut up shop because of the convention centre fire. RNZ's Amy Williams has been talking to construction workers, firefighters and ordinary people who have made it into the city this morning. She joins us again from the fire cordon.
