18-hundred new police officers - an aspiration or an iron-clad target? While the coalition partners appear to be in some confusion, National says it's very clear - it won't be met. Police Minister Stuart Nash told the Police Association annual conference yesterday the goal was18-hundred staff over and above the number of officers when the government took charge. He said it was an aspirational target and if not met by July, it would be met soon after. But Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern later told Parliament the target would be met, full stop. So far there have been almost 17-hundred new graduates. But that number drops to just 892 once staff turn-over is taken into account. National's police spokesperson Brett Hudson told political reporter Charlie Dreaver there's a simple explanation for the confusion.
