Open ocean farming - is it better for the environment?

Conservation groups say they support moves to open ocean farming, but with strict conditions. The Government this week launched its aquaculture strategy, which has a strong focus on expanding marine farming offshore. Guardians of the Sounds says the industry only needs to look overseas at examples of what not to do. But closer to home, there's an example of how it does work. Whakatohea Mussels is farming 12 kilometres off the Opotiki coast in the eastern Bay of Plenty. Chief executive Peter Vitasovich told our reporter Tracy Neal the years it took to get approval are now starting to pay off.
