The government inquiry into the fuel pipeline leak in 2017 has found that fuel companies have failed to make investments to ensure that Auckland's jet fuel supply is resilient enough. The pipeline, which runs fuel from the Marsden Point oil refinery in Northland to Auckland, ruptured in 2017 after it was struck by a digger three years earlier. Planes were grounded and flights canceled, as airlines were forced to ration their fuel usage to 30 percent of their normal daily amount, while fuel companies transported petrol and diesel to stations with trucks. The inquiry recommends the government enact new law to allow it to intervene if fuel companies have not committed to investing more in infrastructure by the end of June 2020. Mike Fuge the chief executive of Refining NZ, which maintains and operates the pipeline says it's important fuel companies work together to invest in infrastructure before it's needed... and that includes getting storage up to 80-percent of 10 days' supply
