Prime Minister Boris Johnson has lost his majority in the UK Parliament. Conservative MP Phillip Lee defected to the Liberal Democrats ahead of a showdown between Mr Johnson and Tory rebels over Brexit.
The rebels are expected to join Labour to bring forward a bill later designed to stop the UK leaving the EU on 31 October without an agreement.
If they succeed, Mr Johnson could call a snap general election on 14 October. Leader of the opposition Jeremy Corbyn says the government wants to leave without a deal.
