E-scooter injuries like those from car crashes - study

From Morning Report, 6:45 am on 30 August 2019

A new study published this morning in the Medical Journal shows e-scooter crashes are causing the types of injuries associated with car crashes. It's found the injured are clogging up already overburdened hospital wards, and the costs to the health system continues to climb. It catalogues a period from October last year to February in Auckland when 21 injured e-scooter riders racked up more than $360,557 in surgery costs. That's no surprise to the Blind Foundation, which wants the scooters to be banned from footpaths. Chris Orr from the foundation told our reporter Hamish Cardwell that while injuries revealed in today's study are alarming they're just the tip of iceberg.
