Push to make New Zealand history compulsory in schools

From Morning Report, 8:36 am on 28 August 2019

MPs will be urged today to make the teaching of New Zealand history compulsory.

The History Teachers Association says it's vital children are taught their own country's history but as matters stand, whether they do get to study history is down to luck.

It will appear before a select committee today to speak in support of a petition, signed by more than 3600 people, demanding that schools offer what it calls a coherent programme to teach our young people about our shared past.

Association chair Graeme Ball speaks to Corin Dann about the need to teach our history in schools.
