President Donald Trump's desire to purchase Greenland has been met with derision, but it's also given the people of Denmark a reminder of the importance of the world's biggest island.

The US president is reported to have discussed the idea of buying the autonomous Danish territory, but Greenland's government says that while it is open for business, it is not for sale.

But it's not the first time America has tried to buy Greenland - Harry Truman offered to buy Greenland in 1946 for USD$100 million.

RNZ correspondent in Denmark Jens Ringberg told Susie Ferguson it's hard to tell whether Trump's offer was serious, or if he was trying to create a debate about the Arctic zone before he visits Denmark next month.
