State Highway fight: couple concerned by dangerous intersection

From Morning Report, 6:16 am on 14 August 2019

A couple living next to one of the country's busiest State Highway intersections say they will not give up the fight for major improvements - because lives, including theirs, are at risk.

The intersection at State Highways One and 29 at Piarere, south of Cambridge, was going to be improved with a planned extension to the Waikato Expressway down to the intersection, but the Labour-Coalition government canned it.

Yvonne and Irwin Hawkes have lived on State Highway One for 20 years. Mrs Hawkes says traffic volumes are increasing substantially and it's become very stressful particularly with the number of crashes occurring right outside their property.
