Govt rules out law change on confiscated land in private hands

From Morning Report, 7:42 am on 7 August 2019

The Treaty Negotiations Minister Andrew Little is ruling out a law change that will put confiscated land now in private hands up for return to Māori in treaty settlements.

It comes as protesters enter their third week of occupying Ihumātao in South Auckland in a bid to stop a housing development and have the land returned to iwi.

The protest has driven calls for the return of confiscated lands to Māori, but many Māori MP's refuse to say where they stand on the issue.

RNZ Māori news correspondent Leigh-Marama McLachlan reports.
