Abortion law: Little says no deal as Peters suggests referendum

From Morning Report, 6:43 am on 7 August 2019

The New Zealand First leader Winston Peters says he hasn't hijacked the Justice Minister's abortion reforms by waiting until the eleventh hour to propose a binding referendum.

This isn't the first time Andrew Little has been caught off-guard by Mr Peters - in June last year New Zealand First dropped its support for the three strikes repeal at the same time the Minister announced he was taking it to Cabinet for sign-off.

On Morning Report on Tuesday, NZ First MP Tracey Martin, who has been working with Mr Little on the reforms that would take abortion out of the crimes act, said her party wouldn't be pushing for a referendum.

Just hours later Mr Peters did a u-turn and said there would be.

Speaking to reporters at Parliament, he denied there was anything untoward about his handling of the issue.
